Upcoming Runners

The opening point to points of the year have arrived and unfortunately the entries and runners were very poor. However the unseasonal quick ground is probably the main catalyst for this and I’m sure once the rain arrives and the ground becomes softer then the entries will improve.

We are now less than a month away with our first runners and their work is pleasing us. We will aim both Foxy Cover and Well Afford at the 2m5f and 3m maiden races respectively at the Clifton-On-Dunsmore meeting on December 16th. However both horses will want a bit of give in the ground so will have to see what the weather holds in store and go from there. If miraculously the rain still hasn’t arrived by then we will aim them both at the Chaddesley Corbett meeting just after Christmas.

Beautiful October Days

The weather has finally turned to the joy of all National Hunt trainers up and down the country. Although with the dry weather now forecast for a week or so we should be able to get the horses turned out again daily, which is fantastic.

We had equine dentist Nick Lawes in last week to sort out any underlying problems that may be going on in the horses mouths. He learnt his trade doing a course with the Equine Dental Association of Australia. This is renowned for being one of the best equine dentistry courses in the world, allowing in only 2 people per course. He is now based back in England and does all of leading flat trainer Richard Faheys horses. Having Nick on our team can only be a positive.

All the horses are back cantering now, and we are pleased with their attitude and work. Our 3yo by Passing Glance has been making use of the new jumping lane, that was put in over Summer at Stockton Hall. He’s a very relaxed horse who takes it all in his stride and makes a lovely shape over the variety of obstacles. We hope to give all of the horses a school over hurdles on the all weather within the next week.

Horses Back In Work

All the horses are back in work, with Well Afford being the most forward of the bunch. He has started cantering and we are very pleased with what we are seeing from him.

Foxy Cover looks to have strengthened up thanks to his summer break, which was to be expected, especially considering he was an end of June foal. The form of his only run to date has worked out well with the winner an unfortunate second in a bumper at Stratford. He schooled well over fences at the end of last season so should be a very fun horse for the enthusiastic Dave Bostock and his syndicate.

The Indian summer that we are currently in the middle off may be interrupting plans for the National Hunt trainers, however we and the horses are enjoying the unexpected warmth and dry here at Ash Tree. All the horses are getting turned out during the day - long may it continue.

Busy Summer

We have had a busy summer at Ash Tree Stables, presssure washing, disinfecting and cleaning out all the stables. Along with all the maintenance work that has been carried out we have also been busy breaking horses in and re-schooling young horses.
It was great to get our first young horse to break in for Stuart Parkin and Mike Grech. They own a lot of horses with Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, and Alan King amongst others. Hopefully they are pleased with the job we have done and will continue to  support us.
With the summer slowly disappearing, thoughts have turned to the Point to Point horses. Well Afford has started his road work, with the plan for him to have a run before the New Year all being well. He’s a horse we are looking forward to running, if he recreates his Irish Point to Point form then he shouldn’t be running in maidens for very long.
The rest of the horses will be having shoes put on in the next week, with the plan to run them January/February time.
